Dispersalloy is triturated in a dental amalgamator for approximately 8-10 seconds for the 1-spill capsule at the amalgamator's recommended speed setting. Trituration time may need adjustment based on the specific amalgamator model and speed. Properly triturated amalgam should have a glossy, cohesive appearance when extruded from the capsule — dull, crumbly mix indicates under-trituration, while over-triturated amalgam is excessively warm and sticky. Each amalgamator model's recommendation should be consulted.
Dispersalloy achieves its initial set within the working session, allowing initial carving while still soft. Final finishing and polishing should be delayed for at least 24 hours to allow the amalgam to reach its full hardness and dimensional stability. Polishing a freshly placed amalgam before full set can pull surface particles from the matrix and create a rougher surface. At 24 hours, the amalgam can be finished with burs and polished with appropriate amalgam polishing pastes.
The need for a cavity liner or base under Dispersalloy depends on the remaining dentin thickness and the clinical situation. In deep cavities where the remaining dentin is thin (less than approximately 1-1.5mm), a calcium hydroxide liner or glass ionomer base is placed to protect the pulp from thermal and chemical stimuli. In cavities with adequate remaining dentin, no liner is required. Amalgam does not bond to tooth structure, so mechanical retention is provided by cavity design.
