Ivoclar recommends Adhese Universal as the primary bonding agent for IPS Empress Direct. Adhese Universal is a universal adhesive compatible with all three bonding strategies (total-etch, self-etch, selective-etch) and has been optimised for bond strength performance with the IPS Empress Direct resin matrix. Third-party adhesives are generally compatible, but optimal marginal integrity and long-term bond performance data are primarily derived from studies using Adhese Universal or the previous ExciTE F adhesive.
IPS Empress Direct is finished using standard composite finishing sequence: initial gross reduction of excess material with fine diamond burs, followed by finishing discs (Soflex, Sof-Lex Pop-on or equivalent) through coarse-medium-fine-superfine grades, and final high lustre polishing with silicone composite polishing points (Astropol or equivalent). The filler system in Empress Direct is optimised to accept a high surface polish that is retained in clinical function. Glazing with a light-cure surface sealant is optional but can improve marginal seal and stain resistance.
